Anime Review: Diabolik Lovers

Source: Hulu

*Spoilers Ahead!*

First things first.

What is Diabolik Lovers?

Diabolic Lovers in an anime about a girl who gets sent to this mansion by her father (who is a priest) and their church. She then meets a group of boys who turn out to be ~big surprise~ Vampires. From the very first moment she walks in they try to drink her blood. The anime follows her in her journey of living in this mansion and learning who exactly these vampires are and their past.

The genre issue:

This was very confusing for me because where I watched it on Hulu, it listed it as "Drama, Romance, Horror, Anime, Fantasy, Mystery, Supernatural, Animation, and International." However, when I first saw it, it only listed "Drama" and "Romance".
After watching the Anime, I would leave everything but the Romance part (If I'm being honest). Considering the plot and tagged genres, I assumed it would be something similar to maybe.... "Rosario Vampire" or maybe even "Vampire Knight" (but without the incest)….. It wasn't.

Why I HATED the anime:

I wasn't expecting some overly romantic plot, but from my POV, there was no romance.
There was a lot of sexualized situations, but they were more portrayed as forced situations (⊙_⊙;) (that's not really my cup of tea). At one point, I hoped that they would create a romance with the last guy (no forcing athumnything….yay) but alas, they did not. This wasn't really what I'd call romance, if you're into it cool, but I wouldn't have bothered with the "Romance" tag. That was my whole point for watching and it never happened.....

Other things I didn't like:

At one point I accepted the anime for what it was and was expecting more from it, yet nothing ever happened. I wished she (MC) wouldn't physically fought with the characters. Her helpless attitude was driving me nuts. The one thing that I did love was when she finally "killed" herself. I was almost expecting her to transform into a vampire, then do a complete 360 and become a badass and hopefully get revenge to either the vampires or the people who sent her to be the "sacrifice".... but that also didn't happen.

Things I DID like:

I really liked the art. They were all very well drawn and even the scenery was beautiful.
I also really liked their backgrounds, they all suffered from troubled pasts. It did show their backgrounds, but I wish they went into more detail of their father and even Yui's father (I almost expected him to make an unexpected visit and explain why he sent her there). They might've showed clues but the most attention towards the adults were shown toward their uncle and Cordelia (she was such a bitch, they should have gave her more scenes). My favorite male character was either Subaru or Ayato. They definitely should have made either Ayato or Subaru possessive of Yui. Instead she kind of got passed around *cough* slut *cough*….. No. But I think this was an okay anime. I think it would have been better it they just went full on Horror.
For example, a hunting game where Yui is thrown in this terrifying situations with vampires trying to kill her and she has to toughen up and fight back. Then she ends up killing every one of them and once the hunt is over she is just completely damaged that she either A.) can't return to normal society and becomes a serial vampire killer or B.) kills herself because she will never be the same again.....

Overall, I would recommend watching the first episode at least. But I personally didn't like it (even though I watched the whole thing) and wouldn't watch it again.

If you did watch it then congratulations, there's a second season. I did watch it, it's VERY similar to the first one, except with different boys with (big surprise) troubled pasts.... I won't be doing a review.
This is my first Anime review.... I don't know if I'll do another one but it kept my mind off of the world, which was very calming.

Anime I'm Currently Watching: Hanasakeru Seishonen
I am about half-way through and I definitely recommend…
